Luke 9 | The Promised Light
The lights around my Christmas tree
Sing a song and call to me:
Long ago in darkest night
A child came down, from heaven’s light.
Born to set His people free,
He grew and called out “Come to Me!”
Healing sickness, cleansing lepers,
teaching women, men, and shepherds;
One-by-one the people came
And some began to do the same,
As Jesus, King and rightful Lord,
appointed His ambassadors
in teaching, calling, setting free,
All who’d listen, “follow me.”
“You are the Christ” Peter declared,
Now the kingdom would be prepared!
But, something seemed to go awry,
At least it seemed as days went by.
Momentum built and crowds did follow,
But then it was so hard to swallow;
Jesus did not claim His crown
But rather turned things upside down.
For now He told of trouble and strife
For Him, and all who’d follow in life.
How could this be, the people wondered?
Isn’t this the One who’d plunder
The enemy’s camp and bring great freedom
To all who entered into His kingdom?
Yes, this was the One foretold
By Moses, Elijah, and prophets of old.
But first, He had to make things right,
Piercing the darkness, flooding with light;
In shocking twist, He first must be
A sacrifice for you and me.
This blessed One would one day reign,
But not quite yet, first came pain;
As laying down His life for us
He paved the way for us from dust
To enter into glory’s home
and reign with Him upon His throne.
This was the plan from ancient days
Fulfilled in God’s mysterious ways.
Foretold from ages long since past,
This babe would break the curse at last.
It all began one blessed night,
A child came down, the promised Light.
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Isaiah 9:2
“Then he said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Peter answered, ‘The Christ of God.’” Luke 9:20
