Advent Series: Day 19

Luke 19 | The King is Coming

A glorious day has arrived!

For three long years, the disciples watched and learned as Jesus, little known at first, performed miracles and preached the Kingdom. It wasn’t long, though, before momentum grew, and many more came to realize the magnitude of what was happening right in front of them.

The Messiah was here!

Can you imagine the buzz of excitement as they prepared the way for Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem? No doubt they were expecting Him to usher in the Kingdom that very day (Luke 19:11).

Fulfilling the prophecy from Zechariah, Jesus came riding on a donkey while the crowd cried in joyful exuberance, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Little did they know, in just one week’s time, this Lion from the tribe of Judah would lay down His life as the Lamb of God.

But for now? Joy! And with that joy, a foretaste of what awaits all His followers on the day of His Second Coming.

For then He will not come on a donkey, but a mighty horse!
He will not be riding to death, but to victory!

And today? Today I hear echoes of the beloved Christmas hymn, as we rejoice that long ago in a little town a glorious announcement was made to a young virgin girl that the King was, at last, coming!

O Come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O Come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!
Come, and behold him, born the King of angels!
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him
O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord!*

“You will bear a son…He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord will give him the throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:31-32

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”  Zechariah 9:9

“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war…on his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11,16

*“O Come, All Ye Faithful” (Adeste Fideles), traditional Latin hymn; tr. Frederick Oakeley.
