Advent Series: Day 1

Advent Series: Day 1

Join me in reading a chapter of Luke a day, followed by a short reflection.

Luke 1 | Advent Starts with Certainty

How many things in life can we know with certainty? You know, like sure as the sun will rise tomorrow?

A few, I guess.

You could bet your bottom dollar I won’t be eating snails anytime soon.

Or sky diving. Sure as shootin’, that’s not happening.

But really, can we know for absolutely sure what tomorrow will bring? No, we can’t.

There is one thing we can always take to the bank, though, and that’s the ever-faithful Word of God.

Luke wrote at the start of his gospel:

…it seemed good to me also…to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught” Luke 1:3-4 (ESV).

We can have complete confidence that what we read in this good gospel is 100% true- signed, sealed and delivered.

This matters, because there are some things in this book that might leave us scratching our heads wondering if they’re real.

  • An old barren woman having a baby well past her child-bearing years?
  • An angel appearing to a man in the temple?
  • A virgin girl conceiving a child?
  • A man who heals the sick, restores sight to the blind, casts out demons, dies on the cross, and rises again? Really?

Yes, really. It all happened, sure as nose on my face (and even more so!).

This advent season, we’re not celebrating a made-up story so we can play with twinkly lights, spend gobs of money, and get more stuff.

We celebrate, because long ago, in a real town with real people, our glorious God came down in human form and took on flesh so that He could do something incredibly special.

And that, we can hang our hats on.
